Looking at Jesus in the Old Testament
Adam and His Bride

Introduction

While the Scriptures forbid us from making pictures of God, and Jesus being God in the flesh is also thus protected, yet there are many pictures of Jesus in the Bible, especially in the Old Testament. These pictures do not tell us how tall He was, nor what His hair color was, yet they do tell us what He is like.

For the next several weeks, as we celebrate the appearance of God in human flesh, we also want to spend some time trying to see “what He looks like.” Not in the sense of being able to paint a picture of Him, but rather in the sense of being able to recognize Him at work in this world and in our lives. We won’t fool ourselves into thinking that we can look at every instance [picture, if you will]. Rather, we will look at a handful of “pictures” in order to hopefully gain a greater appreciation of a few of the more outstanding aspects of who Jesus is. [That is if you can call any one aspect of Jesus more outstanding than any other aspect.]

I hope that as we take this brief excursion that you will be freshly humbled and awed at the amazing truth that God has called we rebellious ones to be reconciled to Himself, and not only have we been called, but He has shattered the wall which separated us from Himself and by His grace has drawn us to Himself.

May God be eternally praised!

Following Jesus death, the disciples were disheartened. Jesus met with two of them on the road to Emmaus and, beginning with Moses, He taught them all that the Scriptures had to say concerning Himself. Luke 24:13ff.

The Lord made a body for the man.
God created Adam’s body from the dust of the ground. Gen. 2:7
God prepared a body for Jesus so that He might be related to us. Heb. 10:5
Cf. Ruth 4:14 We have not been left without a [kinsman] redeemer.
Gen 49:10 Shiloh would be a descendant of Judah
Another picture of Jesus…when Joseph threatened to send the brothers back to Israel without Benjamin, Judah begged to be kept in B’s place.
Judah offered His life for Benjamin’s.
God created another through the flesh and blood of the first.
From the flesh and blood of Adam, God formed Eve. Gen 2:21-23
Through the sacrifice of the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ, a bride is created. Eph 5:25, 27, 30. HOW DID HE DO THAT?
He. 2:14f “Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil., and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.”
1 Pet 2:24 “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness, for by His wounds you were healed.
Life comes to us through Adam and through Christ.
God made Adam a living soul. Gen 1:27; 2:7
Adam became a living soul. 1 Cor 15:45a
And yet, Adam was of the earth, earthy. 1 Cor 15:47a
God made Jesus a life-giving spirit and the Lord from heaven. 1 Cor. 15:45b; 47b
Heb 10:10 “…By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
1 Cor 15:20ff. If death came by a man, also by a man comes the resurrection of the dead.
Rom 6:1-10 We believe that we died with Christ, therefore it is appropriate to believe that we shall also live with Him.
Rom 8:10-11 If we have died with Christ, our bodies are dead because of sin, but our spirits are alive because of Christ, and, He will also give life to our dead bodies.
